12th-Century Castle with an Intact Norman Keep on the River Eden
Castle and Grounds
Appleby Castle is a motte and bailey castle next to the River Eden in the Eden Valley at the edge of the Lake District. Owned by the Kings of England and Scotland, the castle retains one of the few intact Norman keeps in the country and has 27 acres of grounds; its history dates back to Roman times. Appleby Rail Station is 5 minutes' walk through the town centre, Penrith town centre is less than a 20-minute drive, and both the Lake District National Park and Yorkshire Dales National Park are nearby.

Appleby Castle has 12 bedrooms and three holiday cottages, each with different layouts and antique furnishings.
